The Chinese zodiac — all 12 animal signs

The Chinese zodiac (Sheng Xiao) is a 12-year cycle, each year represented by an animal sign with its own personality, element, and fortune. Your birth year reveals your sign — discover what it says about your character, relationships, and luck. 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse.

How the Chinese zodiac works

Unlike Western astrology, which is based on the month of birth, the Chinese zodiac is based on your year of birth. Twelve animals follow a fixed order — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig — and the cycle repeats every twelve years.

According to legend, the order was set by the Jade Emperor's Great Race: the clever Rat rode across the river on the diligent Ox and leapt ahead to finish first, while the others arrived in the sequence we still follow today. Each sign also carries a fixed element and a Yin or Yang energy, adding further depth to its character. Together these shape how each animal approaches life, love, and fortune.

🧧 How to find your animal sign

Find the year you were born, and you have your sign — for example, those born in 2024 are Dragons, 2025 are Snakes, and 2026 are Horses. Because the same animal returns every twelve years, anyone born in 2012, 2000, 1988, or 1976 also shares the Dragon sign, and so on back through the cycle.

There is one important catch: the Chinese New Year does not begin on 1 January. It falls between late January and mid-February, on a date that changes each year. If you were born in January or early February, you may actually belong to the previous year's sign. To be sure, check the exact date of the Chinese New Year for your birth year — each animal's guide below includes a full table of birth years with their elements.

Find your animal sign

🌳 The five elements & the 60-year cycle

Your animal sign is only half the story. Each year also carries one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — which rotate alongside the twelve animals. Because twelve animals and five elements move together, every animal pairs with every element exactly once across a sixty-year cycle, producing sixty unique combinations. This is why you are not simply a Dragon, but a Wood Dragon, a Fire Dragon, and so on.

🌳 Wood Growth, creativity, and idealism. Wood signs are warm, cooperative, and forward-looking, with a natural drive to expand and nurture new ideas.

🔥 Fire Passion, dynamism, and leadership. Fire signs are charismatic and bold, bringing energy and warmth to everything they touch — though they can burn hot and fast.

⛰️ Earth Stability, patience, and practicality. Earth signs are grounded, dependable, and nurturing, valuing security and steady, long-term progress over risk.

⚙️ Metal Determination, structure, and discipline. Metal signs are focused and resilient, with strong principles and the persistence to see commitments through.

💧 Water Intuition, adaptability, and wisdom. Water signs are sensitive, perceptive, and diplomatic, flowing around obstacles rather than confronting them head-on.

☯ Yang signs

Yang energy is active, outward, and assertive. These six signs tend to lead, initiate, and express themselves openly:

Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog.

☯ Yin signs

Yin energy is receptive, inward, and reflective. These six signs tend to observe, nurture, and work quietly toward their goals:

Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig.

💞 Compatibility at a glance

Chinese zodiac compatibility follows time-honoured patterns. The twelve animals split into four harmonious trines (三合) — groups of three signs, four years apart, who naturally understand one another:

First trine: 🐀 Rat, 🐉 Dragon, 🐒 Monkey ambitious, quick-witted, and energetic — natural innovators who inspire one another.

Second trine: 🐂 Ox, 🐍 Snake, 🐓 Rooster diligent, steady, and detail-focused — patient builders who share a love of order.

Third trine: 🐅 Tiger, 🐎 Horse, 🐕 Dog passionate, independent, and loyal — freedom-loving idealists who value honesty.

Fourth trine: 🐇 Rabbit, 🐐 Goat, 🐖 Pig gentle, compassionate, and artistic — peaceful souls who create harmony together.

Beyond the trines, six secret friend pairs (六合) share an especially deep bond: Rat & Ox; Tiger & Pig; Rabbit & Dog; Dragon & Rooster; Snake & Monkey; Horse & Goat.

The most challenging matches are the clashing pairs (六冲) — signs sitting directly opposite on the wheel, six years apart: Rat & Horse; Ox & Goat; Tiger & Monkey; Rabbit & Rooster; Dragon & Dog; Snake & Pig. These bonds can still thrive, but they ask for extra patience and understanding.
